Mid-term Results of Clinical Research of Proton Therapy Released by Union Hospital

Time:Nov 25, 2024

The proton radiotherapy system at the Proton Centre of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology('Union Hospital), has been in clinical research for over two months. On October 31, the hospital released the mid-term outcomes in its clinical research of proton therapy, as the first medical institution in Central China to introduce proton clinical research data. The release conference brought together numerous experts and scholars from oncology, radiotherapy, and related fields to discuss the cutting-edge applications of proton therapy technology.

Since the patient recruitment for clinical trial began in April, the Cancer Centre of Union Hospital has screened and enrolled 28 patients for the proton therapy trial. Among them, 16 are male and 12 are female, with ages ranging from 27 to 79. Their tumor types include bone and soft tissue tumors, pelvic (prostate) tumors, abdominal tumors, head and neck tumors, and thoracic tumors. So far, three patients have completed the full treatment cycle, while others are still undergoing treatment. Preliminary results show that the patients have adapted well to the treatment, indicating positive therapeutic effects.

Prof. Yang Kunyu, Director of the Oncology Department, provided a detailed introduction on the clinical research progress and mid-term outcomes. Currently, the positioning accuracy of proton system at Union Hospital has been calibrated to sub-millimeter precision, which can provide better protection for healthy tissues. Tumor shrinkage was observed on patients without any discomfort.

Prof. Yu Jinming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, spoke highly of the hospital’s achievements in the field of proton therapy. He noted that the successful implementation of the clinical research at the Proton Centre of Union Hospital marks a significant new advancement in cancer diagnosis and treatment technology in Central China.

Prof. Zhang Yu, Chair of the Union Hospital Committee, stated that the Proton Centre is one of the first and the largest in Central China. With its four significant advantages, namely advanced equipment, multi-gantry room configuration, comprehensive supporting facilities, and convenient regional location, it will provide world-class proton radiotherapy services to cancer patients in Central China and across the country.
