Patients and their companions can now borrow books for free at Union Hospital by simply scanning a QR code with their mobile phones. Since October 1, 2024, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has launched multiple 'Smart Book Bars' at its Main Campus and Jinyinhu Campus, allowing patients and their companions to borrow and return books for free either through offline self-service lockers or online app.
The offline 'Smart Book Bars' are open 24/7 and offer a wide range of books, including medical, literature, geography, history, economics, biographies, and children’s books. The collection is updated monthly. So far, the ‘Smart Book Bars’ at both campuses have served over 1,700 readers.

In addition, the hospital has introduced a digital reading service, allowing patients to read books on their mobile phones. By logging into the hospital’s WeChat official account 'Wuhan Union Hospital' and selecting the corresponding section, patients can access over thousands of popular journals and bestselling books for free, provided their location can be confirmed within the hospital. This is the first all-time 'Smart Book Bars' service in Hubei Province.
