Brief Introduction: The laboratory is a large open research platform for oral and maxillofacial development and regenerative medicine, affiliated to Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, composed of related clinical departments of oral and maxillofacial medicine of Union Hospital (including Stomatology Department, Orthopedics Department, Nuclear Medicine Department, Neurosurgery Department, etc.), integrating biomedical engineering, basic medicine, biomaterials, chemistry and other related disciplines. Each year, the laboratory supports 10-15 innovative projects, and carries out basic, forward-looking, interdisciplinary and integrated innovative research around three stable research directions (developmental biology of oral and maxillofacial tissues, risk factors and pathogenesis of oral and maxillofacial deformities, and new strategy for regeneration of oral and maxillofacial defects).
The laboratory aims at revealing the biological laws of the development of oral and maxillofacial tissues, clarifying the molecular mechanism of regulating the growth and development of oral and maxillofacial tissues, exploring the genetic and environmental risk factors of oral and maxillofacial deformities, analyzing the abnormal changes of molecular signals and the pathogenesis of oral and maxillofacial deformities, seeking to more accurately analyze the growth and development of oral and maxillofacial tissues and metabolic status, and achieving the accurate diagnosis and classification of oral and maxillofacial deformities. Meanwhile, the laboratory vigorously develops the application of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering medicine in the field of oral and maxillofacial defect repair, so as to minimize the pain of patients, restore the normal physiological function and aesthetic appearance of oral, cranial and maxillofacial areas, and promote the development of stomatology related disciplines.
Over recent years, the laboratory has presided over more than 60 national, provincial and ministerial projects, published 262 papers in SCI journals, including Adv Mater, Adv Sci, ACS Nano, EMBO J, Angew Chem Int Edit, Cancer Res, etc., obtained 13 national authorized patents, won 3 first prizes and 3 second prizes of Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress Award, and cultivated an average of 20-30 graduate students every year. In the future, the research team will strive to build a high-level basic and translational medicine research platform to realize the early prevention and accurate repair of oral and maxillofacial deformities.
