Brief introduction

The Department of Urology at Union Hospital was established in 1952 and is one of the earliest established urology specialties in China. It established the national core periodical "Journal of Clinical Urology" in 1986, and was approved as a post-doctoral station in 1994. In 2002, it established the first institute of urology in in Central-south China. In 2003, the department was rated as a Key Discipline of Hubei Province. Then it was rated as a National Key Discipline in 2007, and found the Kidney Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center of central China in 2014. In 2017, it was approved as the chief unit of the National Key Research and Development Program of China. In 2019, it approved as the chief unit of National Key Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project. In 2020, the department had once again been approved as the chief unit of the National Key Research and Development Program of China. It currently ranks among the top 10 urologic specialties in China.


Since its inception, the department has been approved more than 70 projects which supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China.


Its research work has been playing a leading role domestically. Many national or provincial prizes have been awarded to the department, which included 1 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Advancement Award, 1 first prize of the Hubei Natural Science Award and 1 first prize of the Chinese University Natural Science Award. Hundreds of papers have been published in authoritative journals such as Ady Science, Clin Cancer Res, Nature Communications, Cancer Res, Eur Urology, Mol Cancer, Oncogene, etc.


The Department of Urology has 14 professors/chief physicians, 14 associate professors/deputy chief physicians, 9 doctoral supervisors and 19 master supervisors. In 2000, the department took the lead in proposing the concept of sub-professional and professional grouping in China. The department has now formed 7 sub-professional groups, including urinary tract tumors, urinary calculi, prostate and urinary control, female and pediatric urology, kidney transplantation, trauma and repair, andrology. All of sub-professional groups are dedicated to clinical excellence in urologic care. It offers cutting-edge, patient-focused treatments for male genitourinary tract and female urinary tract disorders.
