Brief introduction

The Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Union Hospital (ITCWM), department of traditional Chinese medicine, was established in 1952 and opened the ward on July 1st, 1955. It is one of the departments of ITCWM in general hospital in China with the longest history. At present, there are more than 60 medical staff and more than 150 beds in the wards/outpatient clinics in the four campuses of Union Hospital including the Main Campus, Cancer Center, West Campus and Jinyinhu Campus. The bed utilization rate exceeds 130% every year. The patients came from more than 20 provinces in China, and some came from abroad.


In 1980, the Department of ITCWM was approved as the master's degree authorized discipline. In 1993, it founded and edited Chinese Journal of Digestion of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. In 2000, it was approved as the doctor's degree authorized discipline. In 2002, it was approved as the third level laboratory of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2003, it was approved as a postdoctoral mobile station and a key discipline in Hubei Province, and the Department of ITCWM was established. In 2007, it was designated as the national key discipline (cultivation discipline). In 2011, it was designated as a national key clinical specialty. In 2013, it became a model unit of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the national general hospital. In 2016, it became the unit of the editor-in-chief of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Case Edition), which was the textbook planned by the Expert Committee on textbook construction of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the textbook planned by the national medical colleges and universities. In 2018, it became the first deputy editor-in-chief of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which was the textbook for the national medical colleges and universities in the 13th Five-Year Plan.


The Department of ITCWM has two sets of first-class medical talents, Traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, to provide patients with first-class medical services. There are national and Hubei Province famous Traditional Chinese Medicine academic succession instructor, "Youth Qihuang" Scholar of the State Administration of TCM,  National Excellent Clinical Talents of TCM (2 persons), Master of TCM in Hubei Province and Wuhan City, Famous Chinese medicine doctors and young well-known Chinese medicine doctors, etc.


The Department of ITCWM undertakes the teaching tasks of undergraduate Chinese medicine courses. The Department of ITCWM has trained nearly 120 doctoral and master students, and currently there are 26 doctoral and master students. The Department of ITCWM has successively presided more than 70 national, provincial, ministerial and horizontal joint projects, including one international scientific research cooperation project. A number of scientific research achievements have won 24 second and third prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of Health, the Administration of TCM, and provincial and municipal levels. The Department of ITCWM has published more than 500 academic papers (including more than 60 SCI papers), and edited or participated in the compilation of more than 20 monographs and textbooks.


After years of clinical research and exploration, the Department of ITCWM has gradually formed a set of diagnosis and treatment methods with the characteristics of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, which has relieved many patients with difficult diseases from all over the country. Clinical subspecialties include tumor, digestion, bone injury, kidney disease, rheumatism, anorectal, gynecology, lifestyle-related diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular, sub-health, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, beauty, etc. Many of the subspecialties serve as the units of chairman and vice-chairman of Hubei Province and Wuhan Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine or Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.
