Department of Radiology of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a national key cultivation discipline, national clinical specialty, medical imaging specialist training base of the Ministry of Health, national peripheral vascular interventional diagnosis and treatment training base, and key discipline in Hubei Province. The department is the first batch of doctoral and postgraduate training bases. The Department is also a postdoctoral mobile station with first-class equipment, first-class talents, first-class technology, first-class service, and the level of subject is in the leading position in China. At present, Professor ZHENG Chuansheng is the director of the Radiology department and the director of the interventional department.

The Radiology Department is equipped with a variety of medical diagnostic equipment, including 25 digital X-ray machines (including breast Full-Field Digital Mammography), 14 high-end multi-slice spiral CTs, and 12 high-field magnetic resonance machines. The interventional center has 4 specialty operating rooms, 4 large-scale digital interventional X-ray machines, and 50 beds in the interventional ward. The department is equipped with a RIS / PACS system, which connects various subjects of the medical imaging diagnostic platform with clinical departments to enforce comprehensive information sharing. As one of the earliest units in China to carry out CT, magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis and interventional treatment, the department has many well-known experts, and they have particularly high-level experience in complex diseases imaging diagnosis.

In 2003, Tongji Medical College opened the Faculty of Medical Imaging, relying on the Department of Radiology of the Union Hospital, and trained a total of 544 undergraduate students. As the national first batch of master's and doctoral degree authorization points, it has trained more than 100 doctors and more than 200 masters students. As the training base of medical imaging specialists of the Ministry of Health, the department has four training sites for general radiology, CT, MR, and interventional radiology, and has trained more than 1,700 fellow students.

In recent years, the radiology department undertakes more than 50 scientific research projects including 12 national natural science funds and more than 40 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. The department has published more than 400 papers in professional journals at home and abroad and 15 monographs. The department has also obtained more than 10 scientific and technological achievement awards, including 5 provincial and ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 3 national patents. Department of Radiology has established good cooperation with many famous universities around the word.

In terms of talent team construction, there are 9 members of the Chinese Medical Association Radiology Committee, 12 Chinese Medical Association and 13 members of Chinese Medical Association Imaging Technology Committee. By 2021, the radiology department consisted of 291 medical workers in total. Among them, there are 6 professors, 18 associate professors, 5 PhD supervisors and 18 master supervisors. Out of 106 physicians, 55 have PhDs and 51 have Masters degrees. Of the 78 technicians, 4 have a deputy senior professional title or above.

"Early Diagnosis and Targeted Therapy of Thrombotic Diseases" won the second prize of the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Award. "Key Technology Innovation and Application of MRI Clinical Imaging" won the second prize of Hubei Province Science and Technology Progress Award. Professor FENG Gansheng won the title of "Chinese Interventional Master" awarded by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Professor ZHENG Chuansheng won the Nomination Award of "Bethune-type Good Doctor". And Professor HAN Ping won the "Education Fund Outstanding Teacher Award".
