The Department of Pediatric Surgery of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, founded in the late 1970s,it is one of the earliest centers for pediatric surgery in the country, and now is a nationally well-known training center for minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of pediatric surgical diseases in China. The current director is Professor TANG Shaotao. He is the vice president of the Medical Robotics Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the standing committee member of Association of Pediatric Surgeons, Chinese Medical Association, the deputy head of Pediatric Endoscopic Surgery Group, Association of Pediatric Surgery, Chinese Medical Association, the vice chairman and the head of General Surgery Group, the Maternal and Pediatric Minimally Invasive Profession, Chinese Maternal and Child Health Association. Currently, in the main campus, the Department of Pediatric Surgery has 90 beds and 20 doctors.

Clinical technology

The discipline is characterized by minimally invasive surgery and serious or dangerous operations. The early diagnosis of biliary atresia (serum MMP-7 and HSST sign) and the minimally invasive treatment of Hirschsprung's disease are in a leading position.It performed the first successful separation of ischiopagus conjoined twins with both alive in China, the first successful separation of thoracopagus conjoined twins with both alive in Hubei Province, and the first intrapartum surgery in Hubei Province. The discipline is specialized endoscopic surgeries and robotic surgeries of pediatric gastrointestinal malformation, urology, neonatal surgery, oncology surgery, as well as thoracic malformation.

Education

Currently, there are 3 on-duty professors, 3 associate professors, 2 supervisors of Doctorate Candidates and 5 supervisors of Master's Candidates, who undertake the teaching for undergraduate and graduate. 2-6 master students and 2-4 doctor students are recruited every year. For 8 consecutive years, the department has undertaken the national continuing education project "Standardized training of new technology of minimally invasive surgery in children". Members of the department have been chief editors of Laparoscopic surgery for Hirschsprung's disease, Key clinical techniques of pediatric anorectal surgery, Technical points-Difficulties and Countermeasures of Union Surgery, and also the chief translator of Hirschsprung's disease and its homologous diseases.

Scientific research

The department formed three development directions of scientific research for Hirschsprung's disease, biliary atresia and neuroblastoma. The Department has successively undertaken more than 30 projects of the National Natural Science Fund. The research results have won 1 Science and Technology Progress Award of Hubei Province (first prize), 1 Technological Invention Award of Wuhan (first prize), and 1 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (second prize).
