The Orthopaedic Department of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was founded in the 1950s. This department was one of the first to set up a doctoral program in the 1980s and became a postdoctoral research centre in the 1990s. It was designated as an excellent department in the health system of China's "national advanced collective of medical and health systems" in 2009, and was awarded the first batch of national key clinical specialties by the Ministry of Health in 2010. It set up "Wuhan Union Three-Dimensional Digital Orthopaedics Research & Development Centre" in 2016. And the English academic journal, Biomaterials Translational, was launched in 2018. It has more than 600 patient beds, covering eight developed subspecialities: oncology orthopaedics, traumatic orthopaedics, spinal orthopaedics, joint orthopaedics, paediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, orthopaedics of the foot and ankle and orthopaedics for reconstruction. It hired four visiting professors from both domestic and overseas institutions, three academicians and set up five international cooperative medical centres. Fourteen professors were enrolled in the subprofessional group of the Chinese Orthopaedics Society. There are 12 doctoral supervisors and more than 20 master supervisors. Annually, there are more than 320,000 outpatient visits and over 18,000 surgeries. Its scale and level of diagnosis and treatment both rank first in Hubei Province.

In recent years, under the leadership of Professor SHAO Zengwu, the director of the department, scientific research has also made great breakthroughs. In the last three years, the department has obtained several projects, includinga Key Grant supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a National Health Committee Major Disease Prevention and Control of Science and Technology Plan, and a National Health Committee Major Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Ability Construction Project, as well as winning almost a hundred grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
