Brief introduction

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a national key discipline integrating clinical service, teaching, and scientific research. Both Gynecology and Obstetrics sub-specialties are key clinical specialties accredited by the Ministry of Health. In addition, the department is qualified as a doctoral and master degree conferment affiliation, a national postdoctoral workstation by the Ministry of Education, a clinical drug trial base by the State Food and Drug Administration, a standardized training base for residents and a training base of level IV endoscopic surgery by the Ministry of Health.

The OB/GYN department was one of the earliest established sections in the Union Hospital. Since its establishment in 1866, the department has been dedicated to improving the health of women at all stages of life through comprehensive care. Nowadays, the OB/GYN department has four sections, i.e. gynecologic oncology, general gynecology, obstetrics, and reproductive medicine, with three well-equipped specialized laboratories, the laboratory of gynecologic oncology, the laboratory of prenatal diagnosis and the laboratory of reproductive medicine. The department has 383 beds across 14 wards and more than 400 medical staff, including 146 physicians and nearly 300 nurses, who offer care for approximately 350,000 outpatients and 20,000 inpatients and conductmore than 10,000 surgeries every year. In addition to patient care, scientific research is an important activity. In the past decade, medical staff performed 53 scientific research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, published nearly 200 scientific papers indexed by SCI/SCIE, and awarded the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Hubei Province. Meanwhile, the department trained more than 300 postgraduates (about 1/3 of them awarded doctoral degree). As a main referralcentre for difficult and complicated cases in central China, the department functions as a platform of training medical students, residents, practicing physicians and fellows for the country.

The gynecologic oncology section offers specialized care for women with gynecologic malignancies. Gynecologic oncologists are well experienced in minimally invasive techniques, who performed more than 600 laparoscopic surgeries per year with aminimally invasive surgery rate of 98% in early stage uterine cancers and 50% in ovarian cancers. In addition to conventional laparoscopic radical surgeries, fertility-sparing surgeries and single-port and robot-assisted laparoscopic surgeries are carried out, as appropriate, to improve the quality of life of patients. Moreover, the department provides comprehensive therapy for women with benign and malignant gynecological tumors as essential supplementary to surgical treatment.

The general gynecology section's activity spans the full spectrum of benign gynecologic conditions, including pelvic floor dysfunction, endometriosis, female reproductive tract malformation, infection and other diseases. The department offers a wide range of surgical services for patients with pelvic floor disorders and is able to reconstruct various types of female genital tract dysplasia with good surgical outcomes and few complications. Laparoscopic sigmoid coloplasty has been performed for more than two decades with no surgical failure or severe operative complications.

The obstetrics section shows a modern developmental framework including maternal medicine, fetal medicine, and general obstetrics. The proportion of inpatients with high-risk pregnancy is more than 60%, and the proportion of difficult cases is more than 50%. By multi-disciplinary team cooperation, the success rate of rescue is more than 97%. The department provides the highest level of diagnosis, treatment and rescuefor critically ill pregnant and parturient women, especially the management of dangerous placenta previa. The hysterectomy rate and the incidence of complications are significantly lower by adopting innovative suture techniques and autologous blood transfusion.

The reproductive medicine section mainly engages in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of reproductive endocrine disorders and infertility, and has been qualified to provide effective treatment for couples with infertility of various causes. The experienced team of infertility physicians offers the assisted reproductive techniques including conventional IVF, egg intracytoplasmic sperm injection, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, embryo freezing and thawing, sperm/egg freezing and thawing, donor egg IVF, in vitro maturation of immature eggs, cultivation of blastocyst, laser assisted hatching, artificial insemination with husband semen, multiple pregnancy selective reduction, ovarian cyst puncture, epididymis testicular biopsy, hysteroscopy technology, etc. Meanwhile, the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complicate diseases, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, recurrent abortion and some genetic diseases are also at an advanced level.
