The Laboratory Medicine Department of Union Hospital is a comprehensive discipline integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, and also one of the first national key clinical specialties, one of the first MOH training bases for laboratory specialists, a key discipline in Hubei Province, and the chair member of Hubei Laboratory Society, taking a leading position in China. The department has a 24h emergency rapid examination room, clinical examination room, clinical biochemical room, clinical immunology room, clinical microbiology room, clinical gene amplification laboratory, and molecular genetics laboratory, equipped with world-class test equipment. Up to now, the department has completed more than 420 test items, with its test ability and level recognized by China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) ISO15189 Medical Laboratory Accreditation. The department takes the lead in China to offer 24h one-stop service for emergency rapid examination and provide quick and accurate test results.

The Laboratory Medicine Departmentis a strong discipline. As of July 2016, the department has a total of 95 official staff members. It is affiliated with HUST's Medical Examination Department, a provincial brand major in Hubei Province, which implements the teaching and management mode of department-discipline integration, and enrolls outstanding students from all over the country, with four years of schooling. Since its establishment more than ten years ago, the department has reached an employment rate of 100% for its graduates.

Based on its excellent technical team and advanced equipment, the Laboratory Medicine Department actively carries out clinical research while completing clinical work. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 20 projects, including NSFC projects, won the first and second prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award in Hubei Province and Wuhan City respectively, published more than 250 academic papers in professional journals, among which more than 80 papers are indexed by SCI. Its staffserved as the chief editors of more than 10 textbooks and the associate editors of 2 textbooks for medical colleges and universities in China, and participated in the editing of several monographs, enjoying a high reputation in the provincial and even national clinical examination sectors.

The Laboratory Medicine Department conducts strictinternal quality control for each test item, and actively participates in external quality assessment. So far, it has taken part in a number of quality assessment plans organized by the Clinical Test Center of National Health Commission and the Hubei Clinical Test Center. Some of the projects are involved in the Asia Pacific and global external quality assessment, and have achieved outstanding results.
