Brief introduction

The Department of Haematology, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical School, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, was one of the earliest institutes of haematology, founded by national-famous hematologists Prof. Bianming Wang and Prof. Di Shen in 1961.

The Department of Haematology incorporates clinical diagnosis and treatment, scientific research, teaching and talent training. In recent years, its comprehensive strength ranks among the top five Institutes of Haematology on Fudan University Ranking List. The academic leader, Dr. HU Yu, is the president of Union Hospital. He also serves as the chairman-designate of Haematology Society of Chinese Medical Association, the leader of thrombosis and hemostasis group, the vice chairman of Internal Medicine Society of Chinese Medical Association, and the vice president of Haematology Society of Chinese Medical Association.

There are 9 wards for inpatients, including 5 general wards, hematological intensive care unit(HCU), hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) unit, Haematology ward in the western campus, and pediatric Haematology ward. HCU was one of the first units for the in-time treatment and centralized management of severe and critically-ill hematological patients, and has become the treatment center in southwest China. In 2020, the 100 laminar-flow wards with 30 rooms have been established for HSCT. So far, over 1800 cases of all kinds of transplantation have been completed, 90% of which were allo-HSCT. With nearly 200 cases per year, it has been among the top of HSCT at home and abroad.

There are 7 subspecialities of Haematology, including thrombosis and hemostasis, HSCT, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, red cell diseases, and cell therapy. With 8 labs, including morphology, immunity, thrombosis and hemostasis, molecular biology, HLA typing, haemolytic anemia, genetics, and stem cell center, the Department of Haematology has become the world-class diagnostic center of molecular and genetics biology. The most updated standardized treatment has promoted the diagnosis of hematologic diseases to the molecular and genetic level.

For scientific research, more than 50 programs have been granted, including the National Key Research and Development Program and National Science and Technology Major Project of Ministry of Science and Technology, Key National Cooperation Program and general programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc.

Over 500 articles in top journals have been published including Cell, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Lancet series and Circulation as first or corresponding authors. The Department of Haematology has been awarded Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress, National Innovation Excellence Medal, Science and Technology Progress Award and Achievement Promotion Award in Hubei Province, etc. With more than 300 doctoral and master students successfully graduated, the Department of Haematology has cultivated tremendous hematologists for the primary hospitals in the province and country.

Under the general editorship, several high-level academic books have been published, including "Modern internal medicine therapeutics", "Leukemia", "Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation", "Immunology of Internal Medicine", "Clinical Experimental Haematology", "Hemorrhagic Disease", "Series of Clinical Thinking: Haematology", "Clinical Hemorrhage and Thrombosis", and "Flow Cytometry".

As for textbooks, it is the deputy chief-editor of 2nd edition of "Haematology", "Hematologic Malignancies", and participated in the writing of "Internal Medicine" and "Diagnostics" for five-year, seven-year, and eight-year programs. As a result, it was awarded with 2nd prize of National Teaching Achievements, one of the first national first-class undergraduate courses. On the other hand, it is the educational center with the "simulation teaching experimental project" and the establishment of "Teachers' workshop" in Hubei Province.
