General practice is a comprehensive discipline integrating clinical medicine, preventive medicine, rehabilitation medicine and social behavior science. It covers a wide range of health issues across genders and ages, emphasizes the provision of patient-centred and health-centred health care services to all individuals. In 2012, Union Hospital became one of the first clinical demonstration bases for standardized training of general practitioners of National Health Ministry in China.

The General Practice Teaching and Research Section and the General Practice Department were founded in 2020. The department is responsible for medical care, teaching and research, including general outpatient clinic, teaching outpatient clinic, and wards. There area range of medical services provided, including spanning prevention, health promotion and early intervention for persons at risk, as well as the management of acute, chronic and complex conditions, especially uncertainty and undifferentiated illness and complexity.
