Brief introduction

The Emergency Medicine Department of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is the largest medical emergency complex in Hubei Province, which is one of the key national emergency departments. It was ranked 9th in Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) in 2019.


Through the efforts of nearly 20 years, the Department of Union hospital has developed into a patient-centered, multidisciplinary institution for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and critical diseases, including pre-hospital first aid, Emergency Medicine Dept., Emergency Surgery Dept., and Emergency Intensive Care Unit. Emergency situations such as chest pain, acute stroke, major multiple trauma, GI hemorrhage, pulmonary thrombosis, gyneco-obstetrical acute ailments as well as otolaryngological, ophthalmological and osteological emergencies are well and quick managed in the department via a fast avenue. It receives all kinds of critical patients around the clock.


Emergency Medicine Dept. has currently built several high-level multidisciplinary teams, which greatly improve the efficiency and quality of emergency care. Equipped with high-tech life monitoring system (including the point of care tests such as artery blood gas analysis, percutaneous continuous blood gas monitoring, hemodynamic monitoring, EtCO2, lung function test and polysomnography and intra- vascular pressure monitoring, etc.) and treatment facilities such as blood purify cation system (CRRT, hemoperfusion apparatus and plasma exchange, etc.) and invasive and non-invasive cardiac and respiratory life support system, the Emergency Medicine Dept. is able to save life with high success, particularly in the management of sepsis and sepsis shock, ARDS, AECOPD, cardiac pulmonary edema, acute ischemic stroke.


In order to improve the overall level of emergency medicine in central China, Emergency Medicine Dept. (as the leading unit of the expert alliance of multidisciplinary emergency medicine in Hubei Province) has actively carried out works in the following aspects: established the provincial and inter-provincial electronic information network for real-time transmission of emergency clinical information; optimized the allocation of provincial and inter-provincial first aid resources and timely sharing the first aid information and tele-consultation of difficult and critical patients nationally and internationally as well.


The Emergency Medicine Dept. is a training center for undergraduate and graduated students of clinical medicine. It recruits students from all over the world. Meanwhile, it is also a national training base for emergency doctors. There are 104 medical staff in the Department of Emergency Medicine, including 31 doctors and 73 nurses, of whom 2 are full professors, 3 are associate professors, 2 are doctoral mentor and 4 are master mentor. There are many doctors who hold position in national and provincial academic associations.
