The Department of Dermatology of Union Hospital was moved from Shanghai in 1952, led by the world-famous dermatologist, the chief professor Yu Guangyuan. For more than half a century, managed by multiple head professors, including Professor Xu Tonghua, Professor Wang Chunsen, Professor Zheng Yuechen, Professor Tu Yating, and now the Professor Tao Juan, it gradually developed into a multi-specialty comprehensive department, which includes the skin laser research center, four laboratories (dermatology laboratory, skin fungus laboratory, venereal disease laboratory, allergen testing laboratory), and wards in both the main and west campus. It is a committee member of the Dermatology Branch of the Chinese Physicians Association and Chinese Medical Association, the chairman unit of the Dermatology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, the National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Unit of the the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the National Demonstration Base of Skin Medical Beauty, and the Skin Tumor Research of the Dermatology Branch of the Chinese Medical AssociationCenter. Besides, its sub-specialties of skin pathology, skin fungus, venereal disease and skin laser have good reputation throughout the country. It is also responsible for the skin pathology consultation, fungus identification and treatment of difficult and severe skin diseases in Hubei Province and other adjacent areas.

With a strong professional team, it consists of 18 full professors, 8 doctoral supervisors, 10 master supervisors and doctors below the attending level all have achieved a doctoral degree or above. With strong scientific research strength,the department has taken more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial projects, and won one National Science and Technology Conference Award. In the past five years,it has published more than 50 SCI papers, including 28 papers with an impact factor greater than 5 points. Many people have successively served as the vice chairman, standing committee, and the member of the National Association of Dermatology, the vice chairman of the Dermatology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the vice chairman of the Dermatology Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Women Physicians. The department is currently a National Key Clinical Specialty and Hubei Engineering Research Center, with 21 Chinese invention patents, and one authorized for industrial transformation. Moreover, it has written many monographs and specialized books, such as "Dermatology and Dermatology" and "English-Chinese Dermatology" of the Ministry of Education for the 21st century curriculum materials.
