The Comprehensive Medical Care (geriatrics) Department of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a multi-functional clinical discipline covering geriatrics, health care and medical management. There is a medical team of nearly 180 staff members in the department, with about 200 authorized beds available in the Main Campus and West Campus. Originated from the internal medicine cadre ward established in 1950, it is now the national key clinical specialty of geriatrics, doctoral and master degree authorization discipline, cadre and academician health care base in Hubei Province. Due to the medical inheritance and efforts across several generations, the department takes leadership in Hubei Province, and also has highly positive influence in China in the field of geriatrics.

Dr. LIU Chengyun, director of Comprehensive Medical Care Department,is the national third-level professor and the doctoral supervisor.

The department provides comprehensive medical service, such as diagnosis, treatment and functional rehabilitation of common geriatrics and acute and critical diseases, multi-systemic comprehensive elderly diseases and health care of carders. With the combination of clinical practice and scientific research, several unique subspecialties have been established in the department, covering the geriatric diseases of cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, digestive system, neurology, kidney, blood system and general surgery. These subspecialties make it easier for aged patients to receive efficient and high-quality medical service in a form of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment. Besides, the different groups of clinical nutrition, sarcopenia and aging, comprehensive assessment and palliative care in the department can satisfy the unique need of aged patients.

As a component of Union Hospital, the department undertakes a lot of teaching work for undergraduates, postgraduates, residents and refresher doctors, and it offers programs approved by the Ministry of Education for PhD and master’s degrees. With 11 professors and 14 associate professors in this department, it has cultivated a large number of doctors and masters in geriatrics every year.

The research field of the department involves basic and clinical study on elderly and chronic diseases. Its characteristic research interests focus on atherosclerotic, diabetes, dementia, epidemiology of thyroid diseases and geriatric general surgical diseases for elderly people. The department has undertaken over 20 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and published over 100 SCI papers in well-known academic journals. The department has close academic partnerships with other geriatrics departments of many foreign medical institutions and some clinicians here have overseas visiting or studying experience on geriatrics research.

Top-class medical facilities improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment of comprehensive multi-systemic diseases. The department has been equipped with independent CT, MRI, DR, color doppler ultrasound, non-invasive ventilator, central monitor, ambulatory blood pressure monitor, Holter monitor, sleep breathing monitor, arteriosclerosis monitor, dynamic blood glucose tester, non-invasive hemodynamic tester and body composition analyzer, etc. Moreover, it also features dedicated gastroscopy room, cardiac function room, rehabilitation treatment room and pharmacy. The rehabilitation treatment room has airbag external counter-pulsation device, brain dysfunction treatment device, gastric motility treatment device, swallowing dysfunction treatment device, infrared treatment device, intelligent sports limb rehabilitation training machine, etc. The advanced medical hardware, combined with the department's people-oriented service concept, provide guarantee for the rehabilitation of patients with senile diseases, critical and complex diseases, or multi-system comprehensive diseases.
