The Vascular Surgery Department of Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, founded in 1985, is one of the earliest independent vascular surgery specialties in Hubei Province and even in China, as part of the general surgery department of Union Hospital, and is also one of the first national key disciplines identified by the Ministry of Education, a key clinical specialty under the National Health Commission and a highly specialized organization for the diagnosis and treatment of vascularsurgical diseases. Through nearly 30 years of discipline construction, the department has formed a well-equipped academic echelon, which is at the domestic advanced level in terms of comprehensive clinical medical service ability and academic research level, as well as the ward scale, service volume, etc.

At present, the Vascular Surgery Department has two wards set at the Main Campus and the West Campus respectively, with a total of 93 licensed beds, 117 open beds, and a total of 21 doctors and 48 nurses. Each year, the number of patients admittedis nearly 3,000, and the outpatient number is about 10,000. At present, the acdemic and clinical level of the department is at the advanced level nationwide, and at the leading level in the central and southern region and Hubei Province. The department takes the lead in the province to carry out the minimally invasive stent implantation through femoral artery for treatment of aortic dissection, abdominal aortic aneurysm and iliac aneurysm, the minimally invasive tranvascular resection and laser surgery for treatment of varicose vein of lower limb, various ablation and endoplasty procedures for treatment of lower extremity atherosclerotic occlusive disease, the large retroperitoneal tumor removal and inferior vena cava replacement, the inferior vena cava tumor removal, the innominate artery occlusion and bypass surgery, the abdominal aortic dissection aneurysm resection, the abdominal aorto-double femoral artery bypass surgery, the autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation for treatment of diabetic foot and lower limb arterial ischemia, etc. In addition, it is the first to carry out the following operations in the province, such as carotid body tumor and carotid aneurysm resection, point incision for varicose venectomy, intracavitary laser cauterization of varicose veins, B-ultrasound-guided implantation of inferior vena cava filter, catheter thrombolysis for treatment of deep venous thrombosis of lower limbs, arteriovenous fistula removal, fogarty catheter thrombosis removal through femoral artery incision, deep vein thrombosis removal, popliteal vein myoplasty forming, etc. With the continuous development of endovascular technology, the department also carries out a variety of complicated endovascular surgery with high difficulty and high risk to treat a variety of vascular surgical diseases.

Due to the emphasis on basic research and talent training, in recent years, the Vascular Surgery Department has made remarkable achievements in scientific research, and undertaken a number of national and provincial scientific research projects, with the quality and quantity of papers published significantly improved.

After years of effort, the Vascular Surgery Department has gained a growing reputation province-wide and nationwide. The department has organized numerous national and provincial academic conferences and salons, and frequently delivered speeches and academic exchanges at provincial and domestic academic conferences every year, creating a very good academic atmosphere.
