The Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a highly specialized center for the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary diseases in China, national key discipline, national key clinical specialty, one of the first standardtraining bases for resident doctors under the National Health Commission, awarding point for master's degree and doctoral degree in surgery, postdoctoral research station, and one of the famous research centers of hepatobiliary tumor and liver transplantation in China, gathering a group of well-known domestic surgical experts and overseas returnees, with a skilled expert team and complete modern diagnosis and treatment means, having a strong strength and influence in clinical medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and other aspects.

The Hepatobiliary Surgery Department has 15 physicians, equipped with 2 inpatient areas, 97 licensed beds and advanced diagnosis and treatment equipment, such as argon-helium cryosurgery, CUSA, microwave ablation system, 3D laparoscope system, 3D liver reconstruction surgery planning system, liver function analysis system, multi-function monitor, etc. Through years of discipline construction and talent cultivation, the department has formed a team of skilled experts, reasonably composed of the senior, the middle and the young.

Liver transplantation is a development focus of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department. With the support from the hospital and the cooperation from all medical staff in the department, a liver transplantation ward has been specially established since July 2014. Several cases of DCD donor liver transplantation, living relative liver transplantation and other clinical transplantation operations have been successfully carried out, and now it has developed into a specialized modern transplantation center.

Featuring the expertise in hernia and abdominal surgery, it also serves as a training center of hernia and abdominal surgery in central China. The department takes the lead in carrying out tension-free repair of incisional hernia in the province, and actively promotes tension-free repair of inguinal hernia under local anesthesia. The technique of preperitoneal space repair is especially suitable for the elderly and weak patients with various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, with satisfactory therapeutic effects after operation.

Scientific research is always the focus of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department, which adheres to the principle of combining clinical practice with basic research, emphasizes the discovery of scientific problems in clinical work, summarizes the development direction of the discipline, and actively explores the occurrence mechanism and prevention and treatment strategies for liver cancer recurrence and metastasis, and has made fruitful research achievements in the pathogenesis of organ transplant rejection, chemiluminescence and nanomaterials. In recent years, the department has obtained more than 20 NSFC projects and more than 30 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and participated in a number of clinical research projects. A number of scientific research achievements have been published in the international famous journals, including Hepatology, American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, Carcinogenesis, etc.
