Four-Month’s Baby undergoing Da Vinci Surgery in Wuhan Union Hospital

On January 18, 2017BeiBei, a five–and-a-half-month-old baby accompanied by her mother and grandmother, came to the Wuhan Union Hospital to do postoperative review. A month ago, baby experienced a Da Vinci robotic surgery to remove a congenital choledochal cyst, which is currently the youngest child with robotic surgery.

Born on July 30, 2016 from the Hunan Province, Beibei was diagnosed with congenital choledochal cyst after she was born and needed surgery.

This is a complicated operation. Beibei’s parents strived to contact Professor Tang Shaotao, director of pediatric surgery of Wuhan Union Hospital. After a detailed examination, Prof. Tang Shaotao recommended a "surgeon" doctor - Da Vinci robot.

The baby was only 4 months old, weighing 7.5 kg, and the size of the Da Vinci robot relative to baby's body was no doubt very large. On the 7th of last month, after careful medical consultation, Beibei received a successful Da Vinci robotic surgery-----cholecystectomy and hepatic duct jejunostomy, which lasted 210 minutes. There was almost no bleeding during the surgery.

At present, the development of minimally invasive surgery brings revolutionary changes in surgery, and the advance in Da Vinci robotic surgery further expands the scope of minimally invasive surgery. Last year, Wuhan Union Hospital performed 21 pediatric cases of Da Vinci surgeries, ranked first in China, and constantly renews the record of the youngest patient who undergoes the surgery.
